Tuesday November 14 – IES Seminar: Synergistic Buildings in the Era of IoT (Internet of Things)

The Long Island Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers welcomed its members and friends to the IES Seminar: Synergistic Buildings in the Era of IoT on Tuesday November 14 at Leviton Manufacturing Company, 201 North Service Road, Melville, NY 11747.  Michael C. Skurla was the speaker.

Michael C. Skurla is an esteemed speaker among the lighting and specification community, as he frequently travels the country to deliver educational presentations. Mike has spent 22+ years in the building controls and automation field, with a strong specialty in electrical power distribution pertaining to lighting, HVAC, EMS, and larger building automation. A particular area of focus, sparked by his computer science educational background, has been M2M communication and analytics within the built world.

At our Monday, October 23, 2017 meeting at the Old Westbury Campus of NYIT,  we welcomed Emme, who presented on “Adding Value to Buildings through Comfort and Energy Savings for HVAC Systems”

Emme (Energy Management Made Easy) http://www.getemme.com/​ is a manufacturer of a temperature control & energy management system which works with most any existing heating & cooling equipment, providing significant value/impact as it relates to comfort & energy savings.  They have a track record of helping clients significantly reduce their upfront capital expenditures for their controls/heating & cooling related systems through “micro-zoning” downstream in order to affordably provide a zone in every room.  They can integrate with VAV boxes and through 3rd party building management systems (BMS), as well as controlling hot water baseboard and forced air systems.

AEE-LI Chapter Meeting May 22, 2017, featuring Bruce Curtis of Pearl Street Lighting on LED Lighting Technology

The Long Island Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers welcomed Mr. Bruce Curtis, P.E., President of Pearl Street LED Lighting Systems, who presented on LED Lighting Technology and Controls at our May 22, 2017 meeting.

Mr. Curtis began his career with Con Edison of NY working in various roles in the power generation and electrical distribution divisions.  After Con Edison, he co-founded two successful energy start-up companies, The Dome-Tech Group and DT Solar. Mr. Curtis has led numerous large energy/facility projects at leading tri-state healthcare institutions including Montefiore Medical Center, NYU Medical Center, Beth Israel, Columbia Presbyterian, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering. He is a Professional Engineer, Building Commissioning Engineer, Certified Energy Manager, Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional and a LEED AP. AEE-LI Chapter Meeting April 24, 2017 – Tom Pirone, Lime Energy, on Distributed Energy and Energy Efficiency Programs under New York State REV

At our April 24, 2017 meeting, the Long Island Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers welcomed Tom Pirone, Vice President, Lime Energy, who presented on Distributed Energy Resources and Energy Efficiency Programs under the New York State Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative.

AEE-LI Chapter Meeting Monday March 27, 2017, featuring Dr. Amundsen on Heron of Alexandria

The Long Island Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers welcomed Dr. Robert Amundsen, our chapter founder and President, to present ”Hero of Alexandria: The World’s First Energy Engineer?” on Monday March 27, 2017, at the Old Westbury Campus of NYIT. Dr. Amundsen is Director of the Graduate Program of Energy Management at NYIT, as well as a Certified Energy Manager and a LEED Accredited Professional.

This meeting featured a documentary about Hero of Alexandria (also known as Heron of Alexandria), followed by discussion. Often called “The Thomas Edison of the Ancient World” or “The Leonardo da Vinci of Antiquity,” he built elaborate machines which were marvels of ingenuity.

AEE-LI Chapter Meeting Monday November 28, 2016 – featuring David Schieren of EmPower Solar

The Long Island Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers welcomed Mr. David Schieren, CEO of EmPower Solar to our Chapter meeting on November 28, 2016 at the Old Westbury Campus of NYIT.  Mr. Schieren presented on the Solar Industry Landscape on Long Island, including residential and commercial financing options and the State Clean Energy Standard.

David co-founded EmPower in 2003 with the goal of making solar the dominant energy source in New York.  Through 2016, EmPower has installed over 1,500 residential and commercial systems on Long Island.  David is a Board Member of Vision Long Island, an organization dedicated to promoting smart growth and transit oriented development. He has a Master of Science in Energy Management from the New York Institute of Technology.
